Sarah Griffiths: What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a natural system of medicine that uses highly diluted doses of substances to stimulate the body`s own healing mechanisms. It was discovered over 200 years ago by a German physician named Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843). He discovered that natural substances are capable of curing the same symptoms that they cause. This is known as the Law of Similars or like treats like.

The name homeopathy is derived from the Greek words homoios (meaning similar) and pathos (disease or suffering). The homeopathic system of healing quickly spread through Europe and later into Asia and beyond. By the late 1800`s, it became one of the most popular health care systems in North America. In the early 20th century, with the advent of pharmaceutical drugs and other modern therapies, the popularity of homeopathy declined.

In recent years, however, homeopathy has seen a huge comeback as many people have started seeking alternatives to avoid the side-effects of conventional treatments. Homeopathy is an accepted form of medicine in many European and Latin American countries, the UK and India.

The most common approach is known as Classical homeopathy which is based on the selection of a single remedy to address all the symptoms of a patient rather than addressing each symptom a separate disease. The practitioner then waits and observes before giving another remedy. Homeopathic remedies are prepared from diluted substances such as plants, minerals and animal products that are repeatedly diluted and succussed (vigorously shaken). The more diluted the remedy, the more powerful it becomes. This process is known as potentization.

There is no scientific explanation for how homeopathic remedies work. Homeopaths believe that in the future, a way to measure and test the energy of these remedies will be discovered. Though there is no scientific explanation, homeopathic remedies have been shown to have practical health benefits for millions of people and animals worldwide for over 200 years. Homeopathy can be effective for treating any health problem from acute, short term illness to chronic illness, whether it is mental, emotional or physical in nature.

To a homeopath, the diagnosis of your disease is much less important than your individual symptoms. A well-chosen remedy can produce dramatic improvement in acute and chronic conditions, reducing the symptom intensity and the recovery time. During an initial homeopathic intake, the homeopath will interview the patient for up to two hours. The homeopath will ask for detailed information about your physical, mental and emotional health, your likes and dislikes to better understand your unique constitution.

Homeopathy is not only useful for treating people but can also be use for pets. A homeopath can treat your pet with the supervision of your veterinarian.
